Welcome to The Balmoral Cemetery Project

The Balmoral Cemetery Project shares the stories of those interred and memorialised in the Balmoral Cemetery as well as the development and activities of Balmoral Park contemporary and historic.
Established in 1872 as Bulimba Cemetery, the memorial cemetery was planned to occupy the entire 55 acres of the Balmoral Park precinct and was later reduced to 15 acres that occupy the western side of Balmoral Park today, the first documented internment occurred in 1865.
Balmoral Cemetery is one of the pioneer cemeteries established in Brisbane, the others being South Brisbane /Dutton Park, Toowong and Lutwyche /Nundah Cemeteries. Managed by the Brisbane City Council, the cemetery formally closed in 1960 but there are still a number of burial plots for purchase and families of those already interred have continuing rights of use of plots where multiple family members can be interred or memorialised.

Jim Case - Greatest Labor Cartoonist of His Day

Born in 1894, after attending the State School in Brisbane  Jim Case was employed by The Worker Newspaper as a machine room assistant at the age of 14. The Worker was a labour union newspaper originally published as a monthly journal and later became a weekly. One of Cases tasks was taking the the line drawings from chief illustrator Monte Scott to the etchers to prepare etching plates for printing. Case showed early talent in drawing and was encouraged in his artistic endeavours by workmates and without  doubt, considering his style, was a protege of Monte Scott. Balmoral Cemetery Brisbane - First Burial,1865 - Anne Stuart Jamieson

Inscription for Anne Jamieson on the Jamieson Family memorial, Balmoral Cemetery. Anne Stuart Jamieson  was aged 16 when she died after falling from a horse on her parents farm in Bulimba on the 16th of September 1865. Death Notice for Anne Jamieson published in the Brisbane Courier, Friday 22nd September, 1865. Anne Jamieson's Her burial record does not appear in the online grave search tool administered by the Brisbane City Council however there is a reference to Annes burial in the catalogue description for the Bulimba Cemetery held the the Queensland State Archives. The description refers to a note on the back page of the earliest volume of registers. The earliest volume (Item 1) has a list of five Sextons with their years of service on the inside cover.
