About The Balmoral Cemetery Project
The Balmoral Cemetery Project shares the stories of those interred and memorialised in the Balmoral Cemetery as well as the development and activities of Balmoral Park contemporary and historic.
Established in 1872 as Bulimba Cemetery, the memorial cemetery was planned to occupy the entire 55 acres of the Balmoral Park precinct and was later reduced to 15 acres that occupy the western side of Balmoral Park today, the first documented nternment occurred in 1865.
Balmoral Cemetery is one of the pioneer cemeteries established in Brisbane, the others being South Brisbane /Dutton Park, Toowong and Lutwyche /Nundah Cemeteries. Managed by the Brisbane City Council, the cemetery formally closed in 1960 but there are still a number of burial plots for purchase and families of those already interred have continuing rights of use of plots where multiple family members can be interred or memorialised.
